Thursday 5th March 2015 – ski (cross country) **** - Mijoux – sunny but very windy

It’s a glorious day but very very windy. This was no surprise as it has been forecast all week. Mag walked down into the village and got some bread then after breakfast we packed a picnic and went to Sport 2000 and hired some cross country classic skis and boots for 22 euros for us both. Along the road a little further to get our passes from the Tourist Information. We started out on the Pellagrue blue piste which is a 4.5km circuit. We felt very wooden and rusty as we set out along the tram lines but soon got into the swing and felt as if we were doing quite well – I am sure we looked ridiculous but think that is the general idea!! We were even going downhill without falling over which is a first! As we came out of some trees onto a wide open field the wind really whipped up and was causing snow drifts across the piste and filling in the tram lines. This made it really difficult to classic ski but we still did quite well until we were on the return loop of the circuit where a long zig zag down complete with snow drifts did for both of us! It was hilarious, I did the splits, recovered and keeled over sideways and Mag nearly careered off the side and in trying desperately to avoid doing so went over face first – so funny:) We decided that as we had taken our skis off (and Mags were a bit of a pain to get back on, the clip on her boot wouldn’t engage with the ski without a lot of hassle) we would stop for lunch and amazingly there was the perfect upturned food trough right there in the sun, by some fir trees providing shelter from the wind and with a trickling stream alongside:) When we had eaten our baguettes we clipped the skis back on and returned to the village without any mishaps. We decided to go a bit further and set out on the same track as we walked yesterday, leaving Mijoux in the opposite direction to this morning. Unfortunately this big field was a nightmare as the wind had increased further and it was increasingly difficult to find any tram lines at all! We persevered to halfway round the vallee blue piste then headed back to the village in a head wind! We returned our skis and boots and went back to the van exhausted but happy:) It was a shame the snow drifts scuppered us because I think we are actually improving!! We will have to have another go to make sure:) We had lots of neighbours in the car park. We hadn’t seen it this busy all week and can only assume that because of the wind the top pistes were too risky so everyone was down here. This meant that the difficult red piste which comes down in front of the van provided entertainment for the rest of the afternoon as skiers of all standards were careering over where a dip in the piste took them by surprise. It continued being a glorious day right to the sunset and we read our books and had our cuppa with the door open even though it was only 1.5 degrees outside.
